My dad let me in on a little secret, he tried a new sandwich shop and it had the best philly cheese steak sandwiches in Portland.
Now that is quite the claim, especially when I love a good philly cheese steak sammy. So one night I grabbed D and we headed out to try this famous sandwich.
The restaurant is called Shut Up and Eat.
The place was super cute with a very sandwich counter-esque feel. The menu has a lot of amazing sounding items. I was very tempted to order a lot of things. We both HAD to order the philly. On the menu it’s called:
Broad St Bomber AKA cheese steak
1/2 lb thin sliced eye round, chipped with fried onions, cheddar, provolone and choice of hot or sweet peppers $9.75
I got mine with sweet peppers and D got his with both.
SO GOOD. Get out of here with this sandwich. It was so juicy and the cheese melted just right to create a sauce. Seriously good eats!
There was one tiny issue we both had- which when we go back, could be quickly remedied. There were too many onions.
Next time I’ll ask for less onions. D’s actually had less onions because he got both kinds of peppers, so that helps too. If you love onions then this is the perfect sammy.
I can’t wait to go back and try other things. The ingredients were so fresh and the sandwich was freaking awesome. I’ve also heard great things about the brunch (which you can order all day). I’ll be back for the Broad St. Bomber though. I approve.

I went there in the fall and got some ridiculous butternut squash sandwich. It was messy but really good! I am a big time fan of onions so I think I'll like this sandwich with the massive portion they give you 🙂
Rachel says
YOU WILL! The onions tasted great, but we concluded there might have been a whole onion in there. Ha! But butternut squash sounds amazing!

Oh cool, I got the comment box to load with a page refresh. per my Facebook msg., having lived just outside of Philly, I miss cheesesteaks, and there is always a debate about what cheese to use. Some are in the Provolone camp, and others such as myself are usually in the Cheez Whiz camp. Now that I have lived in PDX for 15 years, maybe I have gone to the dark side and would prefer the real cheese. Will find out soon, I have to go try one, possibly today. 🙂

Yeah, too many onions is a problem. Interesting, though–most restaurants where I've had an "onion problem" erred on the side of not having enough onions!
Rachel says
Ha! Then this is just right for you!

mmmm – looks like exactly the type of place my husband and I would love to try. Thanks for sharing this find!

Let me know your thoughts once you try!

Wow, now that's a sandwich!

It made me laugh that, after the rude restaurant name, the sign directing you where to order is so polite. 🙂

That sandwich looks so good! Love me a good cheese steak! Thanks for the tip about the onions. I love onions for added flavor but don't enjoy biting into a mouthful of onions, so thanks for the tip to ask for less.

Man.. I love restaurants that don't take themselves to seriously and have some fun tongue in cheek humor to go with their great food. I can't wait to try it now!

I love love a good Philly steak sandwich and I thought Portland didn't have a place with a decent one. We should head out to SE more for sure. I am taking hubby here when I am back in the city. ( And thx for the tips on onions haha) XOXO, Elif
